THE ESSENTIAL STRAVINSKY (FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 5, 2011)

Oregon Ballet Theatre’s Ultimate Stravinsky-Lover’s Playlist ($25.74) BUY HERE

OBT Stravinsky Playlist

If you love Stravinsky, this playlist is for you!  Check out these excerpts from works you’ll hear in our show (“Valse pour les enfants,” “Cadenza Finala” from Serenade in A, “Tango,” and many more), and don’t miss the last track, Heather Perkins’ “4x4x3” – this electronic sound artist from Portland will be creating original music for The Stravinsky Project.  We also polled Oregon Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director Christopher Stowell and OBT Orchestra Conductor Niel DePonte for their all-time Stravinsky favorites.

(SPOILER ALERT: Two of the pieces in this playlist will appear in our upcoming 2011-2012 season . . . but we can’t tell you which ones yet!)

If you’re a fan of Stravinsky, we’ve also included some other pieces you might like – from Ravel and Prokofiev, to Bartok and Bernstein – as well as some of our favorites from contemporary composers like Steve Reich, Nico Muhly and John Adams.  Enjoy!

SPECIAL THANKS TO Christopher Stowell, Niel DePonte, and Evan Lewis of the L.A. Chamber Orchestra for sharing their recommendations with us!

SONG & DANCE PLAYLISTS (APRIL 21 - MAY 1, 2011)

Left Unsaid Playlist
LEFT UNSAID PLAYLIST
Johann Sebastian Bach

Nicolo Fonte’s sultry Left Unsaid is set to a backdrop of Bach works for solo violin, including the “Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 in D Minor” and the 3rd and 4th movements from the “Sonata for Solo Violin No.3 in C Major.”  Yo-Yo Ma’s lush performances of Bach’s suites for solo cello provide a great complement, so we’ve included a few snippets of those as well.   And for a neo-classical spin on Baroque, and in keeping with our recent Stravinsky theme, we’ve included the 2nd movement from his “Dumbarton Oaks,” a piece based on Bach’s famous Brandenburg concertos.

Eyes On You Playlist
EYES ON YOU PLAYLIST
Cole Porter

It’s an all-star homage to Cole Porter, undisputed king of the old-school show tune whose music forms the foundation of Christopher Stowell’s swingin’ ballet Eyes On You.  We’ve put together a sumptuous feast of Porter’s greatest hits – from golden age classics sung by Marlene, Fred, and Ella, to lush renditions by contemporary artists like Everything But the Girl and kd lang, to straight-up Broadway hits that cry out for jazz hands.  We’ve even included Joan Jett’s wild punk cover of “Let’s Fall In Love” from the Tank Girl soundtrack, Kate Capshaw’s screwball performance of “Anything Goes” in Mandarin from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and a sparkling piano version of “You’re the Top” sung by Porter himself.  It’s like a glass of champagne in musical form.  Cheers!

Bloodhound Gang & Tracie Morris

CAUTION: EXPLICIT LYRICS AHEAD!  Trey McIntyre set his hip-hop ballet Speak to the Bloodhound Gang’s “Shut Up,” which we’ve included here along with their cover of Kim Wilde’s 80’s New Wave classic “Kids In America.”  The rest of the mix is an all-star blend of OBT staff members’ all-time favorite 90’s tracks, with hip-hop classics like “Bust a Move,” “Jump Around” and “Mama Said Knock You Out” side-by-side with alternative/grunge gems like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” by Cake, and Beck’s “Where It’s At.”  And, to balance out all the testosterone – Gwen Stefani kills it on No Doubt’s chart-topping hit “Just a Girl,” Lauryn Hill delivers powerhouse vocals on the Fugees’ stellar cover of “Killing Me Softly,” and Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson rocks “Only Happy When It Rains.”  If we’ve inspired you to host a 90’s-throwback dance party in your living room, then our work here is done.
